June Turning Wheels

Gracing the top of this page are just a few of the Missouri and Illinois  “Gateway” SDC and AOAI Chapter members who are eager to welcome you to St. Louis in August.

Here are a few updates regarding the 51st SDC International Meet:

•At this time the meet host hotels, Sheraton Westport Chalet and the Sheraton Plaza, are booked for the Meet week.  However, our alternate hotel, the Doubletree Hilton still have rooms available. The Doubletree Hilton is located less than a mile south of Westport Plaza across Page Avenue and next  to Interstate 270. The Doubletree has rooms available for the same meet rate of $115 per night. There are free shuttles running between the Doubletree Hotel and the Sheraton Westport hotels.  Click on the “hotel” link at the left to reserve your room. The Doubletree is also our designated location to park trailers and car haulers.

Welcome Night is the traditional Ice Cream Social with Ice Cream and toppings.  A cash bar with be available.

SDC Fun Night will be served with traditional St. Louis Italian fare such as Caesar salad, toasted ravioli and pizza as well as other finger foods such as Crab Rangoon and Chicken Quesadillas.  Entertainment will be provided by The Calhouns, a Studebaker-driving combo who feature Studebaker themes in their songs. A cash bar will be available.

Friday night’s SDC Awards banquet will be served with Beef Sirloin with garlic steak butter or Chicken Dijon along with Westport Salad, Le Creme potatoes, seasonal vegetables and carrot cake for desert.  A vegetarian plate of Portabella Mushroom and grilled vegetables and a child’s plate of chicken fingers and French fries will be also be available.  A cash bar will be provided.

•Trophy Sponsorships by SDC Chapters, companies or individuals are greatly encouraged.  In celebration of the St. Louis meet, Gateway Arch-themed trophies consisting of an Arch made from cable previously used for the tram cars within the Arch will be awarded.  However these are more expensive as they are purchased from the National Parks Association who seem to be very proud of their used cable.  So please help offset the local chapter’s expense and consider a sponsorship.  Information can be found in the June Turning Wheels magazine.

•Please be aware, there is ample parking for member’s cars in the Westport Plaza complex, but insufficient parking for car haulers or trailers.  The Doubletree hotel under same management within a mile of Westport Plaza is allowing meet car haulers and trailers to be parked on their lot. The Doubletree Hotel is also serving as an overflow hotel for the meet with rooms priced at the same rate.  Hotel shuttles run between the two hotels.

Display and Judged vehicles will proceed to the Concours field first thing Thursday morning and will be parked by division.  Following that—based on a forthcoming schedule—vehicles by division will proceed to drive-through judging stations.  Judging procedures for the Meet have been 90% finalized. AOAI Avanti judging will be held on Weds, Aug 19 from 8:30 AM to 1PM and will be conducted via drive-thru judging with electronic scoring. SDC judging will all be held on Thursday Aug 20 also via drive-thru. Electronic scoring may also be utilized for Division 6 (Avanti classes) as a test. Cars will proceed to the Concours area and park in Divisions from 8AM to 9AM. At 9AM cars will begin drive-thru judging with Divisions scheduled thru mid-afternoon. A schedule of Division judging times will be provided at the Meet. There will be two judging "lines" with each line having stations for check-in/operation, photo, authenticity and condition.

Tours. Tours that do not meet a minimum attendance number by July 17 may be cancelled. If you would like to participate in a tour, it is in your best interest to register for the Meet and the tour by July 17.

Ladies Luncheon on Thursday will be a luncheon with Mark Twain. Mark Twain has been called “the greatest American humorist of this age” and “the father of American literature”. The ladies at the 51st Studebaker International Meet ladies luncheon will be privileged to have lunch with “Mark Twain Himself.” Richard Garey is a playwright, poet and actor. He presents a one-man show as Mark Twain Himself. He performs on a regular basis at his theater in Hannibal, Missouri. Richard Garey combines his passion as a stage actor with his skill as a storyteller to bring Mark Twain alive with his wit and stories.

At this point there are about 400 room reservations we are aware of, but only about 150 Meet Registrations. So, if you have not made your Meet Registration, please do so soon if possible. This provides pre-Meet information that helps immensely in final Meet planning. (And you avoid the late fee after July 17.)

The Gateway chapter (AOAI and SDC) members are getting excited about meeting all our guests.
